Hello!
You’ll be pleased to know that, since last week, the newspaper officially got shipped off to THE PRINTERS. This means that now is the scary time during which I remember that the entire thing is actually one big typo, all of the pages are empty, I’ve spelled everybody’s names wrong and libelled at least five extremely litigious celebrities. And there is nothing I can do about it. I can’t even think about it now. It disgusts me. I’m just kidding. Obviously, that’s just a little joke! For me and my friends! I’m actually so excited that (after all the hold-ups - out of my control!!) it’s FINALLY about to be in your hands!
Now, welcome to the new subscribers who joined us from Bluesky! It’s always lovely to get new people in from new places. I hope you enjoy being here and get involved: I love receiving replies from you about what shows you’re seeing and which comedians you’re loving.
On that note, please join us there if you like (@lmaonaise.bsky.com). It seems -tentatively-nice at the moment. It could be considered cringe, which I do reject as a concept these days, to be happy about a social media site but I’m actually quite happy about Bluesky being a thing.
While X/Twitter/whatever we call it has kind of *officially* died now, it died for me over a year ago. What I didn’t quite properly anticipate when leaving then was the loss of connection with a lot of comedy fans I was used to interacting with. (We’re having a blast over on Instagram still, but it’s a different thing, and I’m not emotionally cut out for making reels. Please can I stop making reels? I don’t want to make reels.) I’m re-discovering a lot of people I’d lost touch with and, clearly, meeting new ones (hello!)
Anyway, cut to some time in the future where I’m having a tantrum and leaving again because people have started getting mean >:( All I really care about is that you subscribe to the newsletter anyway, so there:
Ooh p.s. there’s a new thing where you can do a free trial on upgrading if you fancy it. And now, on with the show!
Comedy shows to see!
Pecs: A Drag King Festival
Nov 23rd, 11:30am doors for festival. Show starts 8pm
Shoreditch Town Hall, London; Tickets here
Everyone’s favourite drag king collective Pecs are celebrating an entire decade of being amazing by having an entire day of fun, ending with a huge performance spectacular. Workshops throughout the day range from sessions for Black and POC performers, and trans and nb folk, to storytelling with sound, and inclusive drag make-up tutorials. At the drop-in mini masterclasses, the kings will be imparting their knowledge on essential skills for doing drag, including rhinstoneing and binding safely. There are also exhibitions and a market! I think this is SO wonderful. The gang are using this not just as a celebration but also as an opportunity to pass on all of the things they have learnt over the last 10 years! The big bonanza performance at the end will be a mix of greatest hits and new bits – if you can’t make it in person you can even get livestream tickets!
Molly and Paul Try Heron Foods American Special
Nov 29th, 8pm
Fairfield Social Club, Manchester; Tickets here
Molly McGuinness and Paul Campbell join forces for a third time to pay tribute to the top quality, low-priced Heron Foods through the medium of rock opera. Always keeping it topical, this one is yeehaw-themed (American). There will be songs about Herons, but with a lot of America in them as well, and a special surprise guest..
Ayoade Bamgboye: Breaking My Silence
Nov 25th, 6:30pm
The Bill Murray, London; Tickets here
London’s hottest new comedian has arrived and is finally speaking out. Ayoade Bamgboye is the name on every reasonable comedian’s lips right now and that’s how you know someone is the real deal. Get along to this WIP and see for yourself. I also must urge you to watch her Channel4 Comedy Playground short, Rise and Shine with Channel 9. You’ll be hearing (reading) this name a lot more in this newsletter so get used to it – speaking of which, keep your eyes peeled and firmly on your inboxes this Friday for a little Q&A with Ayoade.
One year of SLAY24 Comedy Club!
Nov 22nd, 8pm
London Hospital Tavern. Tickets here
Happy birthday to SLAY24 Comedy Club, which is a whole year old (though they don’t look a day over 3 months). The comedy night of Kiran Saggu, Dom McGovern and Estefania Baha is celebrating with a line-up we’re ecstatic to reveal is Sharon Wanjohi, Rohan Sharma, Paddy Young and Sophie Duker. And because it’s an actual party, east London legend Milk Shandy is DJing!
If you haven’t already, you should also read Dom’s Meet the Comedian Q&A from Friday’s newsletter, in which he reveals the sexiest name in the world, among other important things.
Tarot: Shuffle (on tour)
On tour now! Tickets and locations here
Tis the season to be comfy, so it’s over to everyone’s favourite nightie-wearing comedian Tarot to remind you that you can achieve anything wearing PJs – even sketch comedy. Kath Hughes, Ed Easton and Adam Drake are on tour with their latest show, Shuffle, which uses the audience to determine the shape of the performance through the medium of tarot cards. The gang, which also includes your friends and mine Kiri Pritchard-McLean and Ben Rowse, continues to give us one of the most fun comedy nights out you can have.
You can meet Tarot via our Q&A now live:
Siân Docksey & Sam Nicoresti Comedy Specials Screening Launch Party
Nov 24th, 2pm
The Divine, Hackney. Tickets here
A Sunday afternoon at the movies! The movies are actually two special comedy specials that are about to be released, but which you can see before anyone else does. Siân’s show Pole Yourself Together! looks to pole dancing to cure existential dread, and saw her taking on the most physically taxing show imaginable (and somehow making a physically taxing show about dread full of joy; read my review of it here!). Sam Nicoresti’s Cancel Anti-Wokeflake Snow Culture is technologically giant, surrealist and frog-based and looks at the nonsense of right-wing rhetoric – but genuinely doing a show about cancel culture that is interesting, funny and innovative (possibly the only one there is?).
Two brilliant comedy specials, and all ticket sales will go to Trans Kids Deserve Better. So there’s no reason not to go!
