Hello!

I’m sitting in Dalston Curve Garden as I write this, surrounded by trees and daffodils and it’s lovely. Having written the newsletter - quite a substantial one today, actually - and settled down outside among the plants, my brain is now empty and smooth :) I’m also “co-working” with Lily Marriott and Rachael Healy (dream team) and getting VERY DISTRACTED by chatting. Just let me work! God!

I’m off to see Crybabies in a couple of hours with my friend Joey (hi Joey), which I’m super excited about. I haven’t seen them in an AGE and I always love their shows, regardless of what stage they’re at - if anything, I love the early ones more!

Alright, alright, now on with the show!

Comedy shows to see!

Slay24: Desi Special

April 25th, 8pm
London Hospital Tavern; Tickets here

Rarely has a comedy night vibe been so impeccable as Slay24 – that’s why it keeps selling out. Kiran Saggu, Dom McGovern and Estefania Baha are back in east London for the latest edition, this time a Desi special, featuring a line-up that will make you go omg! Pravanya Pillay, Rohan Sharma, Vidya Divakaran, Rajiv Karia, Mustafa Yasin and Vidura BR make up this month’s comedians. Now That’s What I Call a Huge Slay.

Clandestina Queer Comedy

May 1st, 7:30pm
The Divine, Dalston; Tickets here

It’s comedy time for the girls, gays and theys as Clandestina Queer Comedy is back at The Divine! Chris Hall, Katie Green, Sarah Roberts and Clandestina’s wonderful founder and LGBTQ+ Comedian of the Year winner Victoria Comedy take to the stage at this month’s show.

Nic Sampson: Yellow Power Ranger

April 29th-May 3rd; 9pm
Soho Theatre; Tickets here

As soon as I had finished watching Nic Sampson’s show Yellow Power Ranger in Edinburgh, I wanted to watch it all over again. For me, he is just about unbeatable as a comedy writer (see Starstruck and his previous show Marathon, 1904). This guy knows how to put together the story of a show, but also how to deliver it with full 100% commitment. This one is all about his time playing the actual Yellow Power Ranger on the telly, which you’ve all seen presumably…I mean, who hasn’t? Bring your Sampson merch, he’ll sign anything. Read my review of Nic’s show here!

Liv Ello’s Great Big Cheerio

April 26th, throughout the day (see event for all timings)
Matchstick Piehouse; Tickets here

An entire day and evening of fun including comedy, cabaret, workshops and more. A supergroup of performers join forces to celebrate Liv Ello’s birthday and to fundraise for their top surgery, including Julia Masli, Ella the Great and Pink Lotus, who are on the evening line-up. Throughout the day, you can get involved with workshops on clowning with Riss Obolensky and creative writing with Liv, plus football, badge-making and tarot readings! So much going on – have a look at the event page for more.

Hook Up Culture: Easter Parade

April 29th, 7:30pm
The Finsbury, Green Lanes; Tickets here

It hasn’t been long since I last recommended Hook Up Culture, but I had such a fab time at the last one that I wanted to spread the gospel – in time for Easter (almost)! There’s a mega line-up to celebrate the wonderful concept of eggs, with Pravanya Pillay, Ken Cheng, John-Luke Roberts, Soft Play, Gregg Mayo, Pamela Von Horn, Aruhan Galieva, and Lachlan Werner hosting with Laila Woozeer, and the house band The Fuckaround Five. As well as the combo of comedy, cabaret, poetry, drag and music, there’ll be an egg and spoon race (judged by Ken Cheng) and an easter bonnet competition among other treats. Proceeds go to Islamic Aid Relief.

Bertie Hodd: Dad Jokes

April 29th-May 3rd, 7:15pm
Camden People’s Theatre; Tickets here

Dad’s home! And he’s ready to learn. Bertie Hodd’s drag-clown-cabaret show goes on a “coming-of-middle-age story” (nice) as one regular dad attempts to understand his queer child. I saw Dad at the brilliant Blokenite drag-king night, which was a real treat. Bertie not only has excellent comedic instincts but immense creativity – the two things that, for me, make a great drag king. I remember thinking: this dad’s got more to say! Dad Jokes will explore softer masculinity and the queer reinvention of family – sounds good to me.
