Hello!
You wouldn’t believe how much animosity I’m feeling towards Oasis at the moment. In my life, I have given them close to zero attention. I’ve simply never cared about any of their silly baby boy beef, or their predominantly whiny music, or their manufactured drama. But what I care about a HUGE amount is their incredibly annoying decision to schedule their reunion gigs (that are going to be boring, I bet you a tenner!!) in EDINBURGH during the FRINGE.
These petty millionaires just thought they could waltz in and push up the already extortionate prices even more and we wouldn’t do anything about it!? Well, guess what I’m gonna do about it? Nothing, obviously! Because I am powerless! I am just one small person. The least they could do is pay for somewhere for me personally to stay! (Someone help me!)
Oh dear, what a negative start to the newsletter. Thanks a lot, Oasis. Don’t worry, it’s all lovely from here on in. Aaaaand if you creep below the paywall, you can come and converse with me about the new series of Taskmaster! I won’t tell you whether I loved or hated it — you’ll have to find out for yourself ;)
Our Edinburgh Fringe PR Workshop recording is available! You can get it here now! If you missed out on the workshops and had questions about doing your own PR, I recommend you get it your hands on it :)
Comedy shows to see!
Freddie Hayes: The Magic Lady
May 13-14th, 7:30pm
The Wardrobe Theatre, Bristol; Tickets here
The Magic Lady is tired of being the magician’s assistant. Now she’s ready to show off her own tricks. Freddie Hayes always guarantees a surprise-filled show, and this one promises puppetry, hypnotism and levitation as well as clowny comedy. I saw a little snippet of this at a mixed bill show last year — Freddie is a real talent and just so creative. If you’re not Bristol based, head to Brighton for the Weekend of Weird to catch this, or London Clown Festival next month (more on this coming up in future newsletters!)
Leah Davis & Friends
May 13th, 7pm
The Conduit, Covent Garden; Tickets here
Do you like your comedy with cocktails and soft furnishings and mood lighting? You’ll find all of the above at Leah Davis’s monthly comedy night, which has been featuring smashing stand-up line-ups since it launched earlier this year. This month’s show has Maia Tassalini, Dominic McGovern, Matthew McAloone, Sharifa Butterfly and Michael Odewale. Wash down that drink with some good laughs!
Live Laugh LGBT: elop Comedy Fundraiser
May 15th, 7pm
Orford House Social Club, Walthamstow; Tickets here
It’s a real Emily Bampton kind of week (remember Friday!?). Emily is hosting yet another fantastic Walthamstow-based comedy night, this time a fundraiser for elop’s LGBTQ+ services. Emily is joined by Kemah Bob, Su Mi, Jodie Mitchell and Dan Wye! If these comedians don't make you immediately book tickets, I really don’t know what more I can do for you.
Meet the comedian: Emily Bampton
Welcome to our weekly feature for premium subscribers, where we have a really quick chat with a comedian you might have come across in LMAOnaise before. We want you to get to know the people whose shows we recommend a little better, so we’ve had them answer five of the most pressing questions in culture at the moment.
The Clown Beef Show Instalment 2: The Revenant
May 8th, 8:30pm
Museum of Comedy, London; Tickets here
If there’s anything that keeps my ticker going tick-tick-tick, it’s provoking arguments between clowns and comedians who aren’t clowns. None of these people are stressed enough in my opinion – they should be way more worried about what they’re doing and/or saying, so thank goodness this show is here, pitting clowns against anti-clowns in a series of tasks. The clowns are Mikey Bligh-Smith and Luke Rollason, and are up against two people who are definitely not clowns, Joz Norris and Lorna Rose Treen. Master of ceremonies, Ciaran Chillingworth, is joined by special guests Ozzy Algar, Alwin Solanki and Lee Kennedy. It’s very likely it will all end in tears, but at least there will be resolution.
Comedy in Ruins
May 9th, 7:30pm
The Real Al Taproom, Walthamstow; Tickets here
Everybody knows I am a bit of a Walthamstow evangelist these days (though I’m in the “getting people here to hang out” camp, rather than “getting people to buy houses here and make it even more expensive”). Two of Walthamstow’s crown jewels are combining as Comedy in Ruins sets up shop at the Real Al Taproom, one of my fave local places. It’s the first birthday of Emily Bampton’s comedy night, and to celebrate she’s grabbed yet another brilliant line-up: Jodie Mitchell, Kwami Odoom, The Mayor and his Daughter, Fathiya Saleh and Kemah Bob. I know! This is why it sells out every time – because you know the line-up is always gonna be good regardless of who it is.
Verity Sharpe: Landlord’s Wet Dream
May 8th; 6:45pm
Rotunda Theatre, Brighton Fringe; Tickets here
It’s finally arrived! Brighton Fringe is back and already off to a good start. On the very first day, Verity Sharpe is getting things going with Landlord’s Wet Dream. This show is for anyone who’s lived in a crappy house with five housemates and a perpetually damp wardrobe. Do you love having your rent increased constantly for no good reason? Ever been threatened with eviction just for lols? This show is for you! Expect jaunty poems and the desire to join a renter’s union. While you’re at it, have a read of this job advert Verity has posted on the LMAOnaise website.
Also, see more Brighton Fringe shows I recommend down below the paywall!!
