Hello!
Greetings to you all – I hope you were able to make the most of those days of delightful, gorgeous sunshine that have now disappeared. I certainly made the most of it by falling flat on my face and spraining my ankle. I shall be complaining to Oxford City Council for their terribly designed, uneven pavement and sending pictures of my extremely blue ankle. What a time to be alive, eh!
Because of The Injury, and also Passover, I’ve not made it to any comedy since last week, so nothing to report there. However I have been rewatching Only Murders in the Building with my mum, who has just started it. It has reminded me how completely brilliant those first couple of seasons are. Absolute genius. Definitely watch it if you haven’t already!
Lastly, Lily and I had a fab time doing the second of our two PR workshops for Edinburgh Fringe last week – we’re figuring out the best way to make the recording available to those unable to come, so watch this space.
Ok, now time for some comedy reccs and then I’m going to walk around a bunch, because that’s what you’re supposed to do with a sprain.
Comedy shows to see!
Bertie Hodd: Dad Jokes
April 29th-May 3rd, 7:15pm
Camden People’s Theatre; Tickets here
Dad’s home! And he’s ready to learn. Bertie Hodd’s drag-clown-cabaret show goes on a “coming-of-middle-age story” (nice) as one regular dad attempts to understand his queer child. I saw Dad at the brilliant Blokenite drag-king night, which was a real treat. Bertie not only has excellent comedic instincts but immense creativity – the two things that, for me, make a great drag king. I remember thinking: this dad’s got more to say! Dad Jokes will explore softer masculinity and the queer reinvention of family – sounds good to me.
Hook Up Culture: Easter Parade
April 29th, 7:30pm
The Finsbury, Green Lanes; Tickets here
It hasn’t been long since I last recommended Hook Up Culture, but I had such a fab time at the last one that I wanted to spread the gospel – in time for Easter! There’s a mega line-up to celebrate the wonderful concept of eggs, with Pravanya Pillay, Ken Cheng, John-Luke Roberts, Soft Play, Gregg Mayo, Pamela Von Horn, Aruhan Galieva, and Lachlan Werner hosting with Laila Woozeer, and the house band The Fuckaround Five. As well as the combo of comedy, cabaret, poetry, drag and music, there’ll be an egg and spoon race (judged by Ken Cheng) and an easter bonnet competition among other treats. Proceeds go to Islamic Aid Relief.
MOTHMAN: A Romance Musical
April 21st, 7:30pm
Hen and Chickens Theatre; Tickets here
A new musical is always going to get my attention. And a musical that’s also romance that’s also a superhero origin story about a super soldier who accidentally became MOTHMAN when a moth snuck into the machine – that’s simply huge. Alex Franklin and Nikola McMurtrie’s brand new show also features Alex Prescot and Aidan Pittman. Down with musical adaptations of 00s movies, up with this sort of thing.
Liv Ello’s Great Big Cheerio
April 26th, throughout the day (see event for all timings)
Matchstick Piehouse; Tickets here
An entire day and evening of fun including comedy, cabaret, workshops and more. A supergroup of performers join forces to celebrate Liv Ello’s birthday and to fundraise for their top surgery, including Julia Masli, Ella the Great and Pink Lotus, who are on the evening line-up. Throughout the day, you can get involved with workshops on clowning with Riss Obolensky and creative writing with Liv, plus football, badge-making and tarot readings! So much going on – have a look at the event page for more.
Wanting to be Cool, Having to be Funny
April 17th, 7pm
The George Tavern, Stepney Green; Tickets here
Happy Easter. There is only one appropriate way to celebrate this auspicious weekend (bank holiday) and that is with this comedy night with a line-up that is so good it’s pretty embarrassing really. Jack Shep hosts as usual, with Anna Brown, Ayoade Bamgboye, Ele McKenzie, Su Mi and Leo Reich. See? Embarrassingly good. Cringe as hell.
Lovely Boys & Friends: Skins edition
April 21st,7pm
Hyde Park Book Club, Leeds; Tickets here
Ooh baby baby it’s a wild world. Sex. Drugs. The teen life you never even got close to having but would watch with your mum (just me?) with the same confused curiosity you got watching Naked Attraction with your mum (just me???). That’s right! It’s Skins! The latest edition of Lovely Boys & Friends is Skins themed! Joe Kent-Walters and Mikey Bligh-Smith host and are going off the rails, accompanied by Shola May, Sam Nicoresti, Molly McGuinness, Tom Burgess, Freddie Hayes and Swampy. That’s right, Swampy.
Amy Webber: Wannabe
April 17th, 7pm and April 29th, 6:30pm
The Feel Good Club, Manchester, and The Bill Murray; Tickets here
Huge news, Amy Webber’s back! Her debut show, No Previous Experience, was the most impressive musical comedy CV I’ve ever seen and just an absolute delight really. Now, she’s got a new show inspired by being reunited with a box of her childhood junk and all of the angst-filled lyrics she penned as a teen. Amy’s one of my favourite musical comedians, exceedingly multi-talented and hilarious.
