Hello!
I’m pleased to announce that after three weeks, my cold war with British Gas is over. I can stop being the most boring person in town while I complain about it to anyone who will listen. However, one fun thing has come out of it and that is that, entirely out of necessity, I have been to the pool and/or sauna every single morning for nearly three weeks. Now, don’t let this fool you into thinking I am living in the lap of luxury. I am not going to the spa daily. I’m using my local pool, formerly and, I imagine, ironically called “Leyton Leisure Lagoon”. It has slides that sadly aren’t open at 7:20am so I have to use the normal boring grown-up pool. Being out and about at that time of day has opened up an entirely new world of people to me and that world is: old men who go to the sauna every morning for a shvitz. I think I’ve found my people. I want to write a book about them. I await millions of offers from publishers with baited breath.
My comedy diary has been a little spare of late, but I had a lovely time at the re-launch of the Funny Women awards last week, in partnership with BBC Studios’ Funny Parts, seeing the reigning award winner Kate Cheka, former winner Lorna Rose Treen and many other alumni perform on the Comedy Store stage. It’s a fun thing to have a night that’s entirely female and non-binary, and an audience that is too (just about), in a space that’s been so historically male-dominated. A fun frisson to the occasion. I’ve seen many of my current faves for the first time as part of the Funny Women Awards, so hopefully this new era will give me loads more of that And the Funny Women Awards are now open to enter by the way!
Last chance!
It’s your last chance to sign up for the PR workshop I’m running together with Lily Marriott tomorrow evening! You’ll learn all the essentials of running an Edinburgh PR campaign for yourself, from creating your press releases to pitching to journalists to essential timelines, followed by a Q&A and a chance to ask any questions you’ve been desperate to get answers to.
NOW, on with the comedy shows!
Comedy shows to see!
Cabbage the Clown: Sinnyworld (WIP)
April 9th, 7:40pm
Pleasance Islington; Tickets here
One of the coolest new talents and one of the people I’m most excited about for Edinburgh Fringe, Cabbage the Clown is work-in-progressing their debut show this week. Cabbage has won a bunch of drag awards, including Top of the Slops and Not Another Drag Competition, and it’s not hard to see why – every inch of their performance is operating at maximum creativity level, from presence on stage to costumes. I’ve only seen about eight minutes, so I’m VERY keen to see a full hour!
Su Mi: THISMOTHERPHUCKER (WIP)
April 12th, 7:40pm
Pleasance Islington; Tickets here
Remember the giant cob of corn from the first issue of the LMAOnaise newspaper? Well, here they are! Su Mi is also making a ceremonious debut at Edinburgh Fringe with a show that will combine surreal stand-up with music and extreme costuming. It’s one of those hard to categorise shows that we love so much! But we do know that there’ll be trashing of stereotypes and commentary on queerness, racism and mental health. You can read way more about Su in our latest Meet the Comedian newsletter here, if you haven’t already:
Meet the comedian: Su Mi
Welcome to our weekly feature for premium subscribers, where we have a really quick chat with a comedian you might have come across in LMAOnaise before. We want you to get to know the people whose shows we recommend a little better, so we’ve had them answer five of the most pressing questions in culture at the moment.
Wanting to be cool, Having to be funny
April 17th, 7pm
The George Tavern, Stepney Green; Tickets here
Happy Easter. There is only one appropriate way to celebrate this auspicious weekend (bank holiday) and that is with this comedy night with a line-up that is so good it’s pretty embarrassing really. Jack Shep hosts as usual, with Anna Brown, Ayoade Bamgboye, Ele McKenzie, Su Mi and Leo Reich. See? Embarrassingly good. Cringe as hell.
Lovely Boys & Friends: Skins edition
April 21st,7pm
Hyde Park Book Club, Leeds; Tickets here
Ooh baby baby it’s a wild world. Sex. Drugs. The teen life you never even got close to having but would watch with your mum (just me?) with the same confused curiosity you got watching Naked Attraction with your mum (just me???). That’s right! It’s Skins! The latest edition of Lovely Boys & Friends is Skins themed! Joe Kent-Walters and Mikey Bligh-Smith host and are going off the rails. Because it’s Easter of course.
Amy Webber: Wannabe
April 17th, 7pm and April 29th, 6:30pm
The Feel Good Club, Manchester, and The Bill Murray; Tickets here
Huge news, Amy Webber’s back! Her debut show, No Previous Experience, was the most impressive musical comedy CV I’ve ever seen and just an absolute delight really. Now, she’s got a new show inspired by being reunited with a box of her childhood junk and all of the angst-filled lyrics she penned as a teen. Amy’s one of my favourite musical comedians, exceedingly multi-talented and hilarious.
Bits Comedy
April 11th, 7:30pm
Umbrella Cider House; Tickets here
Here’s one for the great stand-up fans out there – a new comedy night and a delicious cocktail? In this weather economy (spring)? Yes, please! Leah Davis, Chantel Nash, Raj Poojara and Alex Mackeith are on the line-up this month, hosted by Jake Patrick. Get there early to enjoy the cider house – that’s what I’d do, and will be doing because I’m going.
